The different types of earring clasps: which one to choose?

Studs, hoop earrings, sleepers… each piece of jewelry has its own style, and often, its own clasp !
But between “butterfly”, “broken” or “clips”, it is sometimes difficult to find your way
Don't panic: we'll explain everything to you, simply, to help you recognize and choose the right clasp according to your comfort and style.
The clasp butterfly (or “stroller”)
This is most common on earrings chips.
A small metal disc (often gold or silver) slips behind the lobe and holds the rod in place.
✔️ The pluses:
- Light and discreet.
- Easy to put on and take off.
- Ideal for fine curls or studs.
⚠️ Namely: remember to tighten it well, otherwise it may slip over time.
The clasp screw
Similar to the butterfly, but here the stem is screw in the tip.
It offers maximum security — impossible to lose your buckle!
✔️ The pluses:
- Ultra safe, perfect for precious jewelry.
- Very comfortable to wear every day.
⚠️ Small drawback: a little longer to put on, but you get used to it quickly.
The clasp breakage (or sleeper)
Typical of creoles and dangling curls, this clasp forms a small hinge which closes behind the ear.
It “clips” delicately, hence its name breakage.
✔️ The pluses:
- Elegant and practical.
- Very comfortable to wear.
- No risk of loss.
💬 This is the favorite clasp for those who keep their curls on day and night!
The clasp hooked
Also called “hook” clasp, it is a simple curved rod that slides directly into the ear hole.
It is often found on light hanging curls.
✔️ The pluses:
- Very quick to put on.
- Gives an airy and bohemian side.
⚠️ Tip: add a small silicone tip at the back to prevent it from slipping.
The clasp lever (or english clips)
A great classic of dangling curls and slightly more sophisticated models.
It combines comfort and safety thanks to articulated stem which folds under the lobe.
✔️ The pluses:
- Very safe.
- Ideal for voluminous curls.
- No need to force it to open or close it.
The clasp clip (for non-pierced ears)
And yes, not all ears are pierced!
The clip allows you to wear curls without holes thanks to a small, soft clip that holds the curl on the lobe.
✔️ The pluses:
- Perfect for trying out a look without commitment.
- No holes needed.
⚠️ Comfort tip: favor clips with pads to avoid pressure after several hours.
