I lost a stone on my ring: what should I do?

J'ai perdu une pierre sur ma bague : que faire ?

Do you notice a gap in place of a stone on your ring, your pendant or your earrings? Don't panic: in most cases, a lost stone can be replaced, and the jewel regains its original appearance. Here are the good reflexes to have right away, what is repairable, how much it costs, and what to do if you cannot move.

Good reflexes as soon as you notice the loss

Above all, two simple actions can save you time and money:

  • Look for the stone. A freshly fallen stone is often not far away: in the lining of a pocket, at the bottom of a bag, on the edge of a sink, in the vacuum cleaner. If you find it, keep it carefully: replacing it generally costs less than providing a new one.
  • Stop wearing the jewelry. An empty kitten (the location of the stone) often has weakened claws. Continuing to wear the ring risks damaging the setting, or even causing neighboring stones to fall out.

Only then can you decide: reinstall the original stone if you have found it, or have a replacement stone installed.

A missing stone, can it be repaired?

In the vast majority of cases, yes. A stone setter can either refit your original stone if you have kept it, or provide and install a replacement stone. This applies to rings, but also pendants, earrings and bracelets.

The most commonly replaced stones are cubic zirconia (in many colors), rhinestones and synthetic pearls. For precious stones (diamond, ruby, emerald, sapphire), replacement is possible but requires a personalized quote, because a corresponding stone must be sourced.

Will the new stone be the same?

The craftsman does his best to find a stone of identical size, shape and color. On common stones like zirconium oxide, the result is usually indistinguishable from the origin. On more atypical, old or branded stones, a slight visual difference remains possible - in this case, you are informed before any installation, to make an informed decision.

This is why we analyze your photos before any treatment, and contact you before any installation if anything merits your validation. And if replacement proves impossible, you are notified and reimbursed for the repair.

Why do stones fall out of jewelry?

Understanding the cause helps prevent it from happening again. A stone is held in place thanks to its setting — most often small prongs, sometimes a bezel setting (a metal rim that surrounds the stone), or a simple glue on costume jewelry. Over time and everyday shocks, these bindings wear out:

  • Claws wear out or become bent by hanging up the clothes, and end up no longer holding the stone.
  • The glue is getting old on costume jewelry, especially in contact with water, perfume or creams.
  • A shock can unseal a stone with one blow.

This is why it is useful to have the setting of a piece of jewelry that you wear often checked from time to time. A sign that should alert you: if a stone “moves” slightly or hangs, it is probably loose and risks falling. Better to get it tightened before you lose it.

Should you replace just one stone or all?

It all depends on your jewelry and your goal. If only one stone is missing from a ring that has several, only that one can be replaced. But if the neighboring stones are visibly worn or loose, it may be wiser to tighten them at the same time, to avoid a repeat visit a few months later. The craftsman will advise you according to the actual condition of the jewelry — without imposing an unnecessary complete replacement.

How much does it cost to replace a stone?

Stone replacement is an accessible repair for common stones. At Azuline, the price starts at €10 online for a zirconium oxide or a rhinestone. Precious stones are subject to a personalized quote. Added to this is €9.90 prepaid round-trip Colissimo if you send your jewelry.

Our mail order stone replacement service works everywhere in France:

  • You fill out the online form, indicate if you still have the stone, and add photos of your jewelry (with the affected area clearly visible).
  • You receive a prepaid Colissimo label by email, and you post your jewel (with the original stone if you have found it).
  • Our artisan setter examines the jewelry, confirms the quote if necessary, carries out the installation and returns the jewelry to you — generally within 7 to 14 working days round trip.

In summary

A missing stone is almost never inevitable. The right reflex: look for the fallen stone (replacing it costs less), and stop wearing the jewelry so as not to damage the setting. Replacement starts at €10 for a common stone (zircon, rhinestone), or around €19.90 all inclusive by mail order; precious stones are on quote. Having the setting of your frequently worn jewelry checked prevents a lot of loss.
